China invested totally $66 billion in environmental protection and ecological construction in 5 years 

A high ranking official from SEPA today revealed that in the 5 years from 1998 to 2002, China invested totally RMB580 ($66) billion in environmental protection and ecological construction. Being the largest developing country in the world, China adopted effective measures during the process for enforcing the elimination of poverty and improvement of the environment. From 1998 to 2001 the central government invested RMB42.7 billion in vegetation conservation, subsidy for local farmers and encouraging them to return the over-reclamation farmland into forest and meadow. By the end of 2001, China returned 1.18 million hectares of farmland into forest and grasses and planted 1.1 million hectares of forest and grass on suitable hillside and barren land.

During the 10th five-year plan, China needs to invest RMB700 billion in the pollution treatment and that will occupy 1.3% of the GDP of the same period. The investment will be mainly for realizing three environmentally targets.
